Landscape Function Analysis: Responses to Bush Encroachment in a Semi-Arid Savanna in the Molopo Region, South Africa

چکیده
Various factors lead to increased woody species density, biomass and cover (so-called ‘bush encroachment’) that influence ecosystem functioning services in semi-arid rangelands. Ultimately, bush encroachment has adverse effects on human livelihoods. An understanding of bush-encroached rangelands could contribute improved management, conservation restoration. This study, therefore, aimed determine landscape controlled savanna the Molopo region, South Africa, by using function analysis (LFA) monitoring procedure. Mixed models revealed no significant differences based LFA indices between bush-thickened bush-controlled sites due drought conditions prevailed while survey was carried out. Stability, which largest contributing factors, always had highest numerical value for were still bush-encroached. Soil analyses grass litter patches from aeroplane-controlled average nutrient levels. As expected, high percentages carbon calcium levels found shrub patches. Bush-encroached landscapes are fully functional areas, especially under conditions. Long-term research is required successful management functioning, during periods higher rainfall.

Bush encroachment control and risk management in semi-arid rangelands.
We study the role of bush encroachment control for a farmer's income and income risk in a stochastic ecological-economic model of grazing management in semi-arid rangelands. In particular, we study debushing as an instrument of risk management that complements the choice of an adaptive grazing management strategy for that sake. We show that debushing, while being a good practice for increasing ...
متن کاملThe Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran
Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...
متن کاملDrivers of inter-annual variability in Net Ecosystem Exchange in a semi-arid savanna ecosystem, South Africa
Inter-annual variability in primary production and ecosystem respiration was explored using eddy-covariance data at a semi-arid savanna site in the Kruger Park, South Africa. New methods of extrapolating night-time respiration to the entire day and filling gaps in eddy-covariance data in semi-arid systems were developed. Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) in these systems occurs as pulses associated ...
متن کاملA Review of Bush Encroachment in Namibia: From a Problem to an Opportunity?
Bush encroachment leads to land degradation in semiarid to arid regions. Over 45 million hectares of agricultural land in Namibia are affected. This is worrisome as nearly 70% of the Namibian population depends on agricultural activities and the beef industry is the mainstay of the farming communities. This study employed secondary data sources to provide a review of the problems and benefits o...
متن کاملShrub encroachment can reverse desertification in semi-arid Mediterranean grasslands.
The worldwide phenomenon of shrub encroachment in grass-dominated dryland ecosystems is commonly associated with desertification. Studies of the purported desertification effects associated with shrub encroachment are often restricted to relatively few study areas, and document a narrow range of possible impacts upon biota and ecosystem processes. We conducted a study in degraded Mediterranean ...
